Donabe

A collection of donabe earthenware pots made for everyday cooking and sharing. Crafted with local clay, celebrated for its strength and durability to fire. Each donabe retains and distributes heat evenly, making it suitable for preparing a big portion dish, from steaming, boiling rice, or even dishes ranging from traditional Japanese pots to Spanish paella. The collection spans a wide range of sizes and shapes, from generous 40 cm pots to compact mug-sized forms, and is finished in two colors: a warm reddish brown and a deep black.

Special thanks to Sakuragawa in Kyoto for demonstrating the donabe in use and generously providing their restaurant as our photo venue.

  • Direct Fire Cooking

Designed for direct fire, each donabe can be used confidently over open flame. The form and material support steady heating, making it suitable for a wide range of cooking styles, from simmering to steaming.

  • Tough Earthenware

Made from durable local clay, the donabe is built to withstand daily use and repeated heating. Its robust body reflects the strength of the material while retaining the natural character of handcrafted earthenware.

  • Even Heat Distribution

The thickness and density of the clay allow heat to spread gently and evenly throughout the pot. This promotes consistent cooking, enhances flavors, and helps ingredients cook thoroughly without sudden temperature changes.

  • Design

Designed for daily use, these pieces are comfortable, functional, and aesthetically balanced. The minimal, timeless design blends into modern homes while echoing the rich craftsmanship of this ancient Japanese kiln town.

  • Material

Shigaraki clay is known for its warm tones, coarse texture, natural strength, and its ability to form large-scale pieces. We carefully select the most suitable clay from Shigaraki or nearby regions, ensuring its subtle variations give every item a unique presence that ages beautifully.

  • Crafting

Every shape, whether hand-thrown or molded, is created using traditional techniques guided by our experienced artisans. Their meticulous care and the small variations reflecting the maker's hand fill each piece with unique soul and individuality.

  • Firing

Firing in modern and traditional kilns at various temperatures enhances the clay’s texture and glazing effects. Iron spots, gradients, and slight natural warping are authentic signatures, no one piece is exactly the same, adding layers of uniqueness to Shigaraki-ware.
