Oogoya

Oogoya (Or written as 大小屋) literally means “big hut,” a nickname once used for our original factory building in the early days of the company. It may sound simple, but it reflects where our story began.

Oogoya is dedicated to Shigaraki-ware, a ceramic tradition known throughout Japan. We craft high-quality wares made from local earth, shaped and finished by the people of Shigaraki. Our work blends modern creativity with long-standing techniques, preserving this form of daily craft.

We bring these creations into the world not simply to be admired from afar, but to be used, held, and enjoyed in everyday life. Our mission is to nurture a dedicated team of artisans who share this vision, connecting their thoughtful, handcrafted work with people around the world.

Since 1874

History

For over 150 years, Oogoya has played a dedicated role in the Shigaraki community, continually reinventing itself in step with Japan’s changing times. We began with large pots for the Meiji-era silk industry, later producing ceramic vats for industrial needs in the 1930s and architectural materials in the 1950s, including tiles for the National Diet Building. In the 1970s, we expanded into art ceramic panels, and our craftsmanship has since been showcased at three World Expos: Paris, Osaka, and Aichi. Today, we have evolved from manufacturer to cultural hub, inviting visitors to experience the living legacy of Shigaraki ware.

Rooted in Shigaraki

Community

We founded our store with a commitment to authenticity over scale. Rather than relying on mass production, we decided that the only way to guarantee true quality was to build everything our way. We honor the Shigaraki philosophy of bringing prosperity to the community by creating world-class products right here. By nurturing our own ecosystem of skilled artisans, we ensure that every piece we sell is a genuine reflection of our dedication to the craft.

Experienced Artisans

Team

Our team is a diverse blend of generations and experiences, united by a love for clay and Shigaraki. We have veteran craftsmen who have been with us since our industrial era, working alongside members who have traveled and studied ceramic abroad. Beyond technical skill, our staff is dedicated to genuine hospitality, ensuring you have a memorable and relaxing day at Oogoya. We believe the warmth and passion we have for Shigaraki ware are universal languages we are eager to share with every visitor.
