• MATSUMOTO Tomohiro is a fifth-generation Japanese potter working with Shigaraki clay. He is known for his distinctive explorations of glaze and color. His family history is deeply rooted in Shigaraki, where his lineage as potters has continued for more than 150 years. Several generations ago, his great-great-grandfather chose the path of pottery a decision that established the family’s long-standing relationship with clay and continues to shape Matsumoto’s practice today.

As the fifth generation, Matsumoto chose a different direction from his father, who focused on large garden wares. Turning instead to tableware, he began developing his own approach after studying in Kyoto in his early twenties. During this period, he became known for applying vivid red glazes, often referred to as Aka-e (赤絵) to Shigaraki clay, an expression distinct from the traditional hi-iro (緋色) tones typically associated with the region.

While red glaze remains a central element in his work, Matsumoto’s practice has expanded to include a wide range of glaze experiments. He works with materials such as wood ash and explores various firing methods to influence surface and color. Today, his work spans multiple styles, including pieces finished in white and blue with ash glaze and zaffer, each reflecting an ongoing dialogue between material, fire, and intention.

Working alongside his wife, who is also a ceramic artist, Matsumoto continues to refine his practice through shared experimentation within their studio.

“Durability is essential to me. I want to make pottery with the strength to be used for decades — pieces that could still remain after 100 years.”
