This plate features Matsumoto’s ash glaze and zaffer applied with refined control, paired with an unglazed underside that exposes the coarse texture of Shigaraki clay. Subtle surface patterns add softness and rhythm, balancing the raw material’s strength. Firing marks and crystalline glaze effects give each plate a distinct expression.

Its compact size makes it suitable for small servings, desserts, or side dishes, while it can also be displayed as a decorative object.

Artist

Tomohiro Matsumoto is a Japanese potter working with Shigaraki clay, continuing a family tradition that spans over 150 years. As a fifth-generation potter, he is known for his bold approach to glaze and color. He introduces vivid red tones that contrast with Shigaraki’s traditional hi-iro (緋色) glaze. Today, his work explores a wider range of glazes and firing methods, using materials such as wood ash to create durable, expressive surfaces shaped by fire.
