This large pitcher showcases Matsumoto’s assured handling of glaze at scale. The base remains unglazed, revealing the clay’s coarse texture and warm tones, while the interior glaze creates soft reflections that shift with light and liquid.
Suitable for serving water or sake, this pitcher also functions as a sculptural centerpiece and pairs well with Matsumoto’s sake cups.

Artist
Tomohiro Matsumoto is a Japanese potter working with Shigaraki clay, continuing a family tradition that spans over 150 years. As a fifth-generation potter, he is known for his bold approach to glaze and color. He introduces vivid red tones that contrast with Shigaraki’s traditional hi-iro (緋色) glaze. Today, his work explores a wider range of glazes and firing methods, using materials such as wood ash to create durable, expressive surfaces shaped by fire.
