This small pitcher demonstrates Matsumoto’s nuanced control of glaze density and exposure. The base is left unglazed, revealing the warm hi-iro tones and coarse texture of Shigaraki clay beneath the flowing ash glaze and zaffer. Crystalline effects emerge through firing, adding depth without excess.

A striking vessel for serving water or sake, it works seamlessly with Matsumoto’s sake cups.

Artist

Tomohiro Matsumoto is a Japanese potter working with Shigaraki clay, continuing a family tradition that spans over 150 years. As a fifth-generation potter, he is known for his bold approach to glaze and color. He introduces vivid red tones that contrast with Shigaraki’s traditional hi-iro (緋色) glaze. Today, his work explores a wider range of glazes and firing methods, using materials such as wood ash to create durable, expressive surfaces shaped by fire.
